I got a lot of questions about how I did the blur/depth/light thing with the #HIXTAPE art I drew so here is a quick step by step:
1) fully painted drawing, Hobi’s hands and head/chest are on two separate layers
2) adjusted crop and composition, I cropped in closer to Hobi and I adjusted his hands to be in a different position that emphasized the “H” more. Also used a low opacity layer set to multiply and used a dark blue/purple to add some soft shadows to his hands where the back light would not be hitting them
3) Used filter -> gaussian blur on the head/chest layer to push Hobi in to the bg. Also duplicated the hands layer and blurred that as well, and masked out most of it saving only the bottom of his arms to emphasize his hands
4) Added a multiply layer and used a dark purple for most of his face and chest, and a pitch black on the very bottom to fade that part out completely. Added a tiny amount of light on him by using hot pink and small yellow dust specs, setting the layer to Lighten, and setting the opacity of that layer to really low.

I took the sketch I previously posted and ran with it, all the way into a finished painting. My favorite devil, at that horrible time at 4 A.M. when you see every flaw of your life laid out in your face.
I love Lucifer ( @luciferfox) to bits and pieces for many reasons, but not the least of which I don’t feel so alone as a queer black sheep that simply wants to live life by my own rules. As you may have noticed, I love the show and have since I saw the opening sequence (using one of my favorite ‘me’ anthems no less). I fell hard and fast and I’m desperate that it get picked up, so tweet, reblog, comment, and shout at the top of your lungs on every social platform to Renew Lucifer. It’s been a source of endless inspiration and comfort for me. I wouldn’t have spent easily 40 hours on a painting for no pay if it wasn’t something near and dear to my heart.
(If y’all at @luciferonfox or @thedeckerstarnetwork or anywhere else want to signal boost this with some reblogs, feel free! Y’all found the earlier version of this image, I’d be honored if you’d pick this one up too!)
For those who asked. I say it every time, but you don’t need fancy brushes to make digital art if you don’t want to use them or can’t afford them. To further my point, I’ve included a list of completely free brush packs at the end of this post.

Sketches & Linework |
I don’t so much do linework as I do clean sketches, all one layer, à l’ancienne. So, I like my brushes to have a natural, textured look.
My go-to are Kyle T Webster’s pencil brushes (free with PS);
For something with more bite and less texture, I’ve been using one of Deharme’s sketch brushes from this set;
Below are four free brush packs that I’ve used in the past and can highly recommend, all of which are similar to those I currently work with (squared or angled blendable brushes). They also come with special effect brushes (splatters, foliage, smoke…).
From left to right, top to bottom, least to most complex:
As a little bonus, if you don’t feel comfortable using advanced brushes but still want a textured look, you can download these free paper textures to play with, by S3PTIC-SHOCK on Deviant Art. Put them on overlay, multiply or divide over your painting for a little kick of texture.
Just remember for every person with a trillion custom brushes, there’s another that uses the stock brushes and still creates beautiful art. Fancy brushes are not a necessary, and can actually be a hindrance if you don’t know how to control them.
Hi! This is a peak into my illustration process, based on my last post. I have divided the whole step x step into 6 parts : I – CONCEPT II – COMPOSITION III – COLOR SCHEME IV – DIGITAL PAINTING V – ADDING DETAILS VI – TEXTURE & ADJUSTMENT LAYERS
