The XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe (aka Deathscythe orGundam Zero-Two), is the second of five Gundams sent down to Earth from the Space Colonies in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing. It was piloted by Duo Maxwell.
Duo Maxwell, a collaboration between myself and sambees, done for our Patreon for the monthly fanart poll in February. Gundam Wing won by a landslide! Patrons also had access to the process video, high res jpg, and the layered PSD.
According to Gundam Wikia’s profile of Heero, he has been confirmed as having been genetically modified by Dr. J.
So I poked around, and their source comes from someone who claims that in the German special edition of Endless Waltz bonus material it states:
“"Heero’s education was a tough training of self-discipline, extreme body control and ability to reason. This was only possible by Doctor Jmanipulating his genes. He’s perfect in close combat, computer hacking and mobile suit piloting. There’s nearly no battle situation he doesn’t emerge as winner. Additionally he’s supported by a system in his Wing Zero’s cockpit, which amplifies the pilot’s consciousness"
Our of every source I have ever seen, how the hell did this only emerge on the German EW – SE?
Interesting. It’s been a fanon thing for awhile that Heero’s not quite the average teen (as if one would ever doubt). But in Episode Zero, Dr. J picked Heero up off the street after the assassin Odin Lowe (who Heero had been traveling with) died. I’m no geneticist, but it’s hard to imagine genetic manipulation once the kid’s eight years old. Hormonal I could buy though.
I even have this HC where J forced Heero to take some freaky brand of “space-age steroids”. Then, when the war was over and J was dead, Heero had to cope with withdrawal and learn to live his life with normal human strength and stamina.
@ahsimwithsake makes a good point that we really don’t know how far science has gotten in the GW world, so it’s perfectly possible actual genetic manipulation in older children is feasible.
I do like how we all have headcanons of SOMETHING is up with this kid (I personally lean toward the drugs + nanotechnology route). And hey – suspended disbelief is a thing, haha.
I have a secret semi-cracky headcanon that all the pilots have some kind of weird subsect of New type style abilities. Quatre’s was the only one that presented in a extrasensory way, so it was the only one that couldn’t be explained away. But it would explain a lot of the stuff that all of them can do.
While this is my personal headcanon, I don’t think dubs count as canon. (Since 3×4 is canon in a few dubs but still isn’t “official”.)
@chronicwhimsy I’m with you on the Newtype theory. I have always felt like they were all prescreened and chosen low-key by the Colony Liberation Organization for undefined AC universe Newtype abilities, though they may not have known it at the time. (Especially after finding out that in the parallel story “New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-UNIT” manga the supposed original pilots who had been trained for Operation Meteor were inexplicably replaced by the G-boys) I always found it interesting that they chose kids around a similar age (and a particularly YOUNG age to be prodigal Gundam pilots) Fifteen is a traditional age in the UC Gundam Universe to start your mobile suit career, but what if there was some sort of space-specific celestial event that happened to trigger the Newtype evolution in certain spacenoids around the time of their births?
@lifeaftermeteor It makes me wonder if the “genetic modification” phrasing in the German information dump was somehow a mistranslated word from Japanese – German of an entirely different of concept.
@gundamwing-ellesmith Awesome to meet you, too! Heero backstory has always been my favorite. I’m toying with the clone!Heero concept in my fic right now. How is Doctor J so proficient at neuroscience AND genetics, I’ll never know!
@remsyk-blog Drug therapy is definitely the most plausible theory. 🙂
Either way, this had me imagining kid!Heero eating stem cells for breakfast and now I’m a mess.
I’m loving all the new type/sciency headcanons in the reblogs. Especially the “gravity optional” ones @chronicwhimsy shared. Haha. ❤

Except, ya know, when he first descends to Earth for the assignment he trained a huge chunk of his life for… XD
